Rachel Ignotofsky grew up in New Jersey on a healthy diet of cartoons and pudding. She graduated with honors from Tyler School of Art’s graphic design program in 2011. Now she lives in beautiful Kansas City, Missouri, where she spends all day drawing and learning as much as she can. She has a passion for taking dense information and making it fun and accessible and is dedicated to creating educational works of art.Rachel is inspired by history and science and believes that illustration is a powerful tool that can make learning exciting. She uses her work to spread her message about education, scientific literacy, and powerful women. She hopes this book inspires girls and women to follow their passions and dreams.This is Rachel’s first book and she plans on writing many more in the future. Die Gestaltung des Buchs ist sehr gelungen und lädt Kinder / Jugendliche zum Durchblättern ein. Auch die Grundidee ist genial, die Umsetzung konnte mich leider nicht komplett überzeugen. Es gibt einige Portraits von Frauen, die nicht in den USA gelebt und gearbeitet haben, ich hätte mir noch mehr davon gewünscht. Des Weiteren hätte ich mir eine noch bessere Durchmischung von verschiedenen Arbeitsfeldern gewünscht. Es gibt ein wenig Abwechslung, aber auch hier für meinen Geschmack nicht genug. Auch hat mich auf Dauer gestört, dass Erfolg zu oft an dem Besuch bestimmter Universitäten und ähnlichem gemessen wurde. Damit wurden unzählige Zeilen an Text gefüllt, diese hätte man besser nutzen können um spannende Details aus dem Leben der Wissenschaftlerinnen zu teilen.Trotz meiner Problemchen ist dieses Buch eins, dass ich vielen Kindern und Jugendlichen gerne in die Hand drücken möchte.

Women in Science von Rachel Ignotofsky habe ich zu Weihnachten geschenkt bekommen und es versüßte mir die ersten Wochen des neuen Jahres. Auch, wenn das Jahr erst wenige Wochen alt ist, weiß ich bereits jetzt, dass dieses wunderschön illustrierte Buch zu meinen Lese-Highlights in diesem Jahr zählen wird.Es ist wunderschön gestaltet. Man erkennt bei jedem Porträt, mit wie viel Liebe Ignotofsky die Seiten illustriert und wie sorgfältig die Informationen zu den einzelnen Frauen recherchiert und aufbereitet wurden. Das Buch umfasst insgesamt 50 Porträts von fearless pioneers who changed the world, wie es der Untertitel treffend zusammenfasst.Mit welcher Sorgfalt Ignotofsky bei der Recherche für dieses Buch vorgegangen ist, zeigt die große Auswahl an Ressourcen, die sie bei der Suche herangezogen hat. Beachtlich ist hierbei auch, wie umfassend die Medienauswahl ist: Zeitungsartikel, Interviews, Filme, Bücher und natürlich das Internet. Damit ihr eine Vorstellung davon bekommt, von welchem Umfang ich hier spreche, schaut euch euch den Auszug(!) des Quellen-Verzeichnisses an, das Ignotofsky auf ihrer Homepage veröffentlicht hat. Ich bin mehr als begeistert.Auf jeweils einer Doppelseite präsentiert Ignotofsky die Persönlichkeiten. Links befindet sich ein Abbild der vorgestellten Frau, umhüllt von liebevollen Details, die ihre Persönlichkeit und ihre Forschung wiedergeben. So wird beispielsweise Marie Curie, als die vermutlich bekannteste Frau in diesem Buch, von Reagenzgläsern umhüllt dargestellt. Begleitet werden diese Illustrationen von kurzen Text-Snippets, in denen einige Fakten zu der jeweiligen Persönlichkeit kurz und prägnant festgehalten werden. Am Ende der Seite befindet sich immer ein Zitat der betreffenden Person.Auf der rechten Seite befindet sich das eigentliche Porträt. Diese im Fließtext gehaltene Kurzpräsentation wird umrahmt von weiteren Text-Snippets, die weitere facts über die Person zum Ausdruck bringen. Diese werden auch wieder von großartigen Illustrationen begleitet.Neben bekannten Persönlichkeiten wie Marie Curie oder Ada Lovelace gibt es viele Porträts von Wissenschaftlerinnen, die weniger bekannt sind. Und das finde ich super, denn genau so lernt man wichtige, aber bis heute kaum bekannte Persönlichkeiten kennen.So habe ich durch dieses Buch beispielsweise erfahren, dass Valentina Tereshkova die erste Frau im Weltraum war. Oder dass es Rosalind Franklin war, die die DNA Doppel-Helix entdeckte. Aber auch Katia Krafft als Geologin ist in diesem Band vertreten, die ihr Leben buchstäblich den Vulkanen gewidmet hat. Ihre große Leidenschaft waren Vulkane. Zusammen mit ihrem Mann Maurice unternahm sie mehrere Expeditionen zu Vulkanen, um sie zu fotografieren und zu studieren. Auf einen dieser Expeditionen am Fuße eines Vulkans starben beide, nachdem der pyroklastische Strom seine Richtung änderte und sie beide darunter begrub.Die Palette der Persönlichkeiten ist breit gefächert. Vertreten sind Physikerinnen, Chemikerinnen, Mathematikerinnen und Biologinnen. Aber auch Kosmonautinnen, Programmiererinnen, Botanikerinnen und Suffragetten. Und diese Aufzählung ist gewiss nicht abschließend.Gleichgültig, welche Berufung sie letztendlich ausgeübt haben, haben diese Frauen doch alle eines gemeinsam: Sie haben ihren Traum gelebt, sie haben sich allen äußeren Zwängen widersetzt und das getan, was für sie ihre Berufung war. Damit haben sie die Wissenschaft maßgeblich vorangebracht. Ich möchte mir nicht vorstellen, wie die Medizin oder sonstige Wissenschaften ohne diese Entdeckungen vorangeschritten wären. Sicherlich wären die ein oder anderen Entdeckungen später von anderen Personen gemacht worden, aber das sind nur Spekulationen. Fakt hingegen ist, diese Frauen haben Großes vollbracht und sollten dafür Anerkennung erfahren.Und genau dies tut dieses Buch: Es wirkt dem Vergessen entgegen und gibt Wissenschaftlerinnen, die Großes vollbracht haben, den Raum, den sie verdient haben. In unseren Köpfen, in unserem Bewusstsein.Von mir bekommt Women in Science eine klare Leseempfehlung! Lest dieses Buch! Unbedingt! Es ist wirklich großartig. Mir hat Ignotofskys Buch unglaublich Mut gemacht, an mich und meine Träume zu glauben. Und egal wie steinig der Weg auch sein mag, man soll ihn weiter gehen, denn es lohnt sich – ebenso wie dieses Buch.
1. Es sieht klasse aus.Richtig klasse. Bunte Zeichnungen auf grauen Grund. Im ganzen Buch. Und vorne ist es sogar silbern.2. Es geht über Marie Curie und Lise Meitner hinaus.Ja, es gab und gibt auch noch andere Frauen in MINT-Fächern. Wirklich. Sogar richtig coole Frauen. Wie Ada Lovelace oder Jane Cooke Wright oder Hedy Lamarr oder….3. Ist nicht staubtrocken.Die Frau, die Regalbretter in Kühlschränken erfunden hat? Natürlich dabei. Und das sie ihr neues Küchendesign mit einem Kuchen ausprobiert hat? Wird natürlich auch erwähnt!4. Versinkt nicht in Fachwörtern.Und die wenigen, um die man nicht herumkommt werden im Anhang erklärt. Tolle Zeichnungen inklusive.5. Enthält jede Menge unnützes Wissen.Und jede Menge nützliches Wissen. Aber unnützes Wissen macht doch viel mehr Spaß, oder?6. Alles dabei und alles unglaublich interessantEine ganze Doppelseite mit Zeichnungen von Laborgeräten und ihren Bezeichungen? Oder eine Seite mit Statistiken? Oder eine mit einer Zeitleiste? Einfach hereinschauen!7. Hatte ich erwähnt, wie toll das Buch aussieht?Fotos können ihm keine Gerechtigkeit erweisen, man muss es einfach live gesehen haben.
